I was told something similar by my aunt about working the Chakras, but the truth is that she already had mental disorders that were not being properly cared for and it caused her to attempt to commit suicide in a monet of hysteria, claiming that her spirit guides which she met on her 'path to enlightenment' told her to. This was not the fault of her Chakra journey. More attention is placed upon the questionably unstable practitioners of any group, it makes a better story. But just because your uncle probably heard of a witch with a mental disorder does not mean the two are correlated. Wicca nor witchcraft will give you mental disorders that you did not already have. Mental disorders are usually chemical imbalances in the brain and magic does not affect the physical realm in that manner.

Heavens, no! If anything, it helped me become saner. When In was Christian, I used to believe if I 'only believed hard enough', money would appear in the physical, like some fantasy spell going off. My Landlord, as you can imagine, was not impressed.

Most people who have mental illness have mental illness before going into witchcraft. If they come down with something, it's because of a chemical imbalance, not because of what they were practicing :)

Hope that helps.

no. not a real thing. spirituality of any kind [religion not cult] has been proven to improve ones mental health because it causes you to do some deep soul diving, get to know yourself on a deeper level, and grow in a community. Wicca and paganism especially focus on the individual and learning more about yourself. meditation, journaling, self-improvement, growth. these are things that can help mental health and help us identify negative/harmful patterns and seek further help [versus say 'mental illness is demonic possession, pray it away' mentality of some religious extremists]

why someone like your uncle would make these claims is because he doesn't really know what Wicca is, and is scared because 'i heard from a friend of a friend that it's devil worship and i don't want my loved one getting into that' so he's coming from a place of love, but it's also misinformed. i suggest researching Wicca and presenting him with the facts. be polite and calm, but if he's still set in 'Wicca makes people crazy' agree to disagree and move on. some people are set in their ways and it's best for everyone to move on instead of trying to break through a brick wall by banging your head on it.
